in our formulas, we apply the Precautionary
Principle

Since we seek to offer the consumer maximum safety, we are committed to avoiding the use of ingredients that - although permitted by law - are considered dangerous, based on:

  • scientific literature and research
  • pharmacovigilance reports of undesired reactions
  • evidence of effects on a significant number of consumers
  • safety assessments conducted by C.I.R. experts, opinion on the review of the ingredients

In application of the Precautionary Principle, the EOS Secondo Natura method does not seek to define the toxicity level of an ingredient, but - in the event there are grounds for suspecting it may be toxic - to replace it with an alternative able to guarantee greater safety, thus giving the consumer the opportunity to make an informed choice.

EOS Secondo Natura is committed to seeking ingredients - generally biodegradable and of plant origin - that are able to perform the same cosmetic functions as chemical ingredients, but that are also able to offer greater guarantees for both the consumer and the environment in terms of safety.

Those ingredients replaced based on the Precautionary Principle are permanently excluded from all EOS formulas, so that the consumer is able to recognise the “Safety Zone”.

  • the cosmetic products in the Eos Secondo Natura line are made mainly from biodegradable ingredients of plant origin
  • they are able to meet the needs of delicate, sensitive skin (babies, the elderly, pregnant women), even in the presence of mild or serious skin disorders
  • they are an excellent way to ensure healthy skin remains healthy

The symbols Ve, Valore Ecologico and Vegan OK, which appear on a number of products in the range, guarantee:

Valore Ecologico

  • that the product has been tested and certified as non-irritating
  • that the product is made from mainly
  • biodegradable ingredients
  • that the amount of nickel is lower than 0.1 ppm

Vegan OK

  • that the product contains no ingredients of animal origin

Communication from the EU Commission (2000) 1 final (2 February 2000)::

…whether or not to invoke the Precautionary Principle is a decision exercised where scientific information is insufficient, inconclusive, or uncertain and where there are indications that the possible effects on the environment, or human, animal or plant health may be potentially dangerous and inconsistent with the chosen level of protection

  • safety assessments conducted by C.I.R. experts (opinion on the review of the ingredients)

Reference sources include literature and research (for example the reports by Prof. Genovesi on multiple chemical sensitivity; by Dr. Ernesto Burgio paediatrician and specialist in epigenetics; other scientific publications).

Recent reports, such as the one by Dr. Mariano Spiezia (Helston, Cornwall, UK), list the potential effects of some of the chemical substances commonly used in cosmetics, such as:

  • endocrine disruptors (which interfere with normal hormone function)
  • contaminants with evidence of carcinogenicity
  • toxic substances
  • contaminants harmful to the skin and the environment
  • fragrances and perfumes
In application of the Precautionary Principle, the EOS Secondo Natura method does not seek to define the toxicity level of an ingredient, but - in the event there are grounds for suspecting it may be toxic - to replace it with an alternative able to guarantee greater safety, thus giving the consumer the opportunity to make an informed choice.

INGREDIENTS ABSENT FROM ALL EOS NATURA PRODUCTS,
IN APPLICATION OF THE “PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE”

(precursors of nitrosamine, a cancerogenic substance):
Triethanolamine, TEA, Tea Lauryl sulphate DEA, Cocamide DEA, Cocamide TEA, Lauramide DEA, Lauramide TEA…
SOLVENTS
(denaturants, dissolve the fat of the Corneal Layer):
Propylene glycol (and derivatives), Alcohol (pay attention when it is among the first elements listed of the formula - ca. 10%), Lauryl Sulphate…
ETHOXYLATES
(allergenic; 2 molecules of ethylene oxide form a dioxin):
PEG-20… 30… 80 (the numbers indicate the moles)
PETROLATES and SILICONES
(occlusive - macerating):
Paraffinum liquidum, Petrolatum, Carbomer, …Acrylates, Copolymers…
PRESERVATIVES
(endocrine disruptors, allergenic):
Imidazolidinyl urea (carcinogenic) Glycinate, Phenoxyethanol, Kathon, Methyl-ethyl-prophyl-exyl Paraben…
OTHER INGREDIENTS
Lanolin (may contain traces of organophosphorus pesticides), Quaternary ammonium compounds such as Benzalkonium chloride and Cetrimonium chloride (caustic and irritant)
ANTIOXIDANTS
Dimethicone (contact sensitisation - dryness - cracking - toxic for water organisms; classified as an irritant and dangerous to the environment); EDTA; pharmacovigilance: eczema (Contact Dermatitis study); BHT, BHA (National Cancer Institutes: ”for possible carcinogenicity”)
PERFUME
(sensitising - dehydrating)
a typical perfume can contain up to 100 elements, many of which have never been tested for safety. It is useful to make sure it comes last on the list. It may be IPA=allergen-free, or it may contain allergens, which must be declared.
